Event InfoHidden Gold: Buffalo Soldier & Black Cowboy living History Day
April 25, 2026
Allensworth, CA USA
This project is an exciting, free-to-the-public event honoring the brave men and women who shaped the history of the Old West through their contributions to community life and social justice. We are partnering with the Fresno Unified School District and California State Parks to host an educational day and reenactment. The event will feature interactive workshops and musical performances. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the encampments of Buffalo Soldiers, cowboys, and troops from San Francisco’s Presidio 3rd Artillery. Additionally, the public can “time-travel” and meet historical reenactors portraying legendary figures such as the U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves, Mary “Stagecoach” Fields, Isom Dart, and Biddy Mason. Also scheduled are live cowboy exhibitions, period-appropriate games for children, and a light-hearted skit about Bass Reeves’ apprehension of twin outlaws. Food Vendors will also be available.
The core mission of the “Hidden Gold” living history day is to illuminate the often-overlooked history of African American contributions to the West. Many narratives focus solely on one perspective, but the truth of the frontier is a diverse mosaic of cultures, struggles, and triumphs. By bringing these stories to life through authentic reenactments and educational stations, we aim to inspire a deeper, more accurate understanding of American history in students and community members alike. Our partnership with the school district is crucial, ensuring that thousands of local students can access this rich, hands-on learning experience.
Attendees will not only observe but actively participate. Workshops will cover topics ranging from frontier cooking and crafting to the specific roles and daily lives of the Buffalo Soldiers, who served with distinction in post-Civil War America. The musical performances will feature period-specific folk and spiritual music, adding a rich, auditory dimension to the historical experience. The encampments are meticulously researched and constructed, offering a true glimpse into the past, complete with authentic uniforms, tools, and gear used by 3rd Artillery troops and working cowboys of the era.
The reenactment of Bass Reeves’ twin outlaw apprehension is a highlight, demonstrating the quick wit and bravery of one of the most effective and fascinating lawmen in Old West history. This light-hearted yet informative skit is designed to be engaging for all ages. We encourage families to bring blankets and chairs to enjoy the full day of events, which runs from 10 AM to 4 PM. Admission is completely free, making it an accessible educational opportunity for everyone in the Fresno community and surrounding areas. This is a day to celebrate heritage, heroism, and the complexity of the American frontier.

Standing on their Shoulders
An intergenerational, multicultural arts one-day event at Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, CA. Through a series of workshops and live performances, the project will provide youth and the general public an opportunity to engage with the rich cultural heritage of the Central Valley and honor the contribution of community elders. The event aims to present two $500 scholarships to three high school seniors who’s selected (by a community panel) art forms (painted, oral, sculpted, etc.) embody the theme of this event.
The Reality Store
Based upon a community project in Brooklyn, NY, this event collaborates with local businesses, utility corporations, and banks to provide an immersive experience for 150 students from a selected underserved community to “act” as consumers. Each youth will receive the equivalent of either one month salary or public service to engage with local “businesses.” Students will have the opportunity to budget: e.g. pay rent, childcare, purchase food, eat at McDonald’s, buy a car, etc. Per report, this exciting collaborative venture has proven to be empowering and life-changing, as it enables participants to engage in critical thinking about their choices; shifting from actively impulsively or emotionally to making decisions that align with their individual goals and values.
